Doris Pemberton

Doris H. Pemberton (nee Hawn) of Pennsville, NJ passed away on Thursday, February 5, 2009 at her nephew’s home. She was 85 years of age. Mrs. Pemberton was born in Woodbury on May 5, 1923 and grew up in Paulsboro. She attended Paulsboro Public Schools and graduated from high school in 1941. She was active in basketball and field hockey and was on the champion hockey team. She also attended one year at the Socony Vacuum evening school. Doris was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church, Paulsboro. Doris owned race horses along with her husband, Quint from 1972 to 2004. They raced on the East Coast from North Jersey at tracks along the way to West Virginia, including Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. She had several jobs and worked at the Mobil Research and Development Labs from 1942 to 1945. After a few years traveling she returned and worked at the Mobil Refinery with over 30 years of service retiring in 1985 as Administrative Assistant. Doris was predeceased by her parents Charles E. and Sarah M. Hawn (nee Carson); her sister Marie Vanneman, first husband J.C. White in 1956 and late husband V.F. Pemberton in 1990; and her niece, Roberta Price. She is survived by her nephew and caregiver, Carl Price of Gibbstown; her great niece, Carla DeHoyos of Egg Harbor City; her great great nieces, Nicole and Danielle DeHoyos; her great great nephew, Wilfredo DeHoyos; her niece, Nancy Steely and her family of Brigantine; her brother, Howard E. Hawn Sr. of Mullica Hill and his family. Also survived by special friends, Jackie and Frank Jones (caregivers) of Carneys Point, Cathy and Jack Buckingham of Pennsville, Connie and Dwight Weber of Deepwater, Jean and Ron Benko of Bellmawr, her cousin, Peggy Elliot of Pennsville. Other survivors are step daughters Joyce Scarpo and Judy Toffenetti and their families of Vineland, NJ. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Monday February 9, 2009 in the McBride - Foley Funeral Home, 228 W. Broad St., Paulsboro. Friends may call Monday morning after 10 AM until service time.
