Mr. Dennis Pierson Sockwell

Dennis Pierson Sockwell, age 76, of Paulsboro, New Jersey, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2024. He was born in Woodbury and lived his entire life in Paulsboro. An only child – he was the apple of his mother’s eye. He followed in the footsteps of his father – building a career and retiring from the Paulsboro Refinery. He was a machinist – spending his days repairing and rebuilding pumps and compressors. He took great pride in providing for his family – he believed in hard work and a job well done. He was a lifetime member of the Paulsboro Sportsmen’s Association where he enjoyed Friday Night Darts. He enjoyed astronomy and spending time in his backyard with a good pipe and his telescope. He was a history buff, and his bookshelves are lined with history books– particularly the Civil War. He spent many weekends participating in Civil War Reenactments and also took several trips to visit different Civil War Cemeteries with his wife, Barbara. Post retirement, he enjoyed getting together for monthly breakfasts with his co-workers and good buddies, Steve Devault and Mike Duke. Bob Maddox, who is a lifelong friend from high school, and his wife, Madolyn, shared many memories over the years with Denny and Barbara. Denny and Bob have spent countless treasured days at the shooting range together. Mark Konnick, who grew up across the street on Beacon Avenue, has been a lifelong friend ever since toddler time. Denny, Barbara, Mark and Paula Konnick and John and Dottie Moore have spent many weekends traveling Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay area together. Denny may have been an only child, but he formed friendships that withheld the sands of time and that he considered family. His greatest joy in life were his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed coaching Eric in baseball and Melanie in softball. He loved supporting his grandchildren in school and sport activities. He enjoyed working on cars, watching the Phillies, believed in shopping locally, and took pride in flying the American Flag. He was an animal lover with the biggest heart. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara (Hancock), his dog, Buddy and bird, Oscar, his children – Melanie and Michael Hallam, his grandchildren – Nicholas Hallam, Travis Hack, Dennis Hallam, Logan Hallam, Megan and Ryan Eachus (along with first great grandchild, Miles Eachus who is due to be born in September). He was predeceased by his parents, Pierson and Ethel Sockwell and his beloved son, Dennis Eric Sockwell. The Funeral Service will be held at 7:30 PM Friday August 2, 2024 in the McBride – Foley Funeral Home, 228 West Broad St., Paulsboro. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Friday evening after 6:30 PM until service time. Inurnment private.
