Mr. George M. Walter

George M. Walter age 92 years, formerly of Logan Township died Thursday August 11, 2016 at his daughters home in North Carolina. George was born on April 11, 1923 in Paulsboro to Joseph and Eva Walter and a family of 10 siblings. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Wilma Wilson Walter, his brothers Joseph, John, Anthony, Steve, Paul, Thomas and sister Mary. George is survived by his sister Eva Bundens and brother Frank; sisters in law, Mary Walter and Kay Walter, brother in law, Clint Searl and his children, Judy Gillis and husband Ray of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and Linda Hair of Carolina Shores, NC. George has 4 grandchildren, George Gillis and wife Kathy of Bel Air, MD, Joseph Gillis and wife Debbie of Boulder, WYO, Lisa Sager and husband Edward of The Plains, VA, Jamie Gillis and wife Victoria of Mebane, NC. George also has 6 great grandchildren, Taylor, Sydney, Kelsie, Asela, Rodrigo and Lorca Gillis. He is survived by many nieces and nephews whom showed much love and kindness to him. After attending Swedesboro High School, his youth was spent on the family farm. At age 21 he joined the Merchant Marines, a service for which he was very proud. He traveled to Murmansk, Russia as his ship ran the blockade on numerous occasions. George traveled the Pacific Corridor and crossed the equator. George was a beekeeper all his life and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others and was active in the NJ Beekeepers Association. He was retired from Mobil Oil Refinery in Paulsboro, NJ after 30 years of service. He was active in Logan Township government serving in several different capacities. He was an avid Notre Dame Football fan and loved Monday morning quaterbacking the games with his good friend Gene Watcher. Dad was a great storyteller and introduced many to the Jersey Devil and Indian Joe. Along with the storytelling he taught many a youngster to play checkers and dominoes. He loved to hunt and spent many days in the woods with his grandchildren. Special thanks to Trudy Jenkins and Linda Cresta for their caring and concern for Dad. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday August 16, 2016 in the McBride – Foley Funeral Home, 228 W. Broad St., Paulsboro. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Tuesday morning after 10 AM until service time. Interment St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Swedesboro.
