Mrs. Irene D. Marks

Irene Dorothy Marks, age 91, died Monday, April 8, 2024, at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home in Vineland. She was born July 13, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Mary and Joseph Stasney. She married her cherished husband of 70 years, James John Marks, on September 3, 1949. She graduated from Kensington High School in June of 1950. They moved from Philadelphia to Bellmawr, NJ in 1957. In 1970, they moved to Audubon, NJ and then retired to their home in Glassboro in 1994. Irene worked as a saleswoman in the Bellmawr new-home development in the latter 1950s. She eventually became the bookkeeper for that housing developer for most of the 1960s. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Irene worked for a major photo developing company as their customer service representative. One thing she especially loved about this job was driving throughout the greater Delaware Valley. It was at this time she purchased expensive camera equipment, taking many photos of her grandson, as well as natural scenery including areas along the Delaware River. She finished her career working for her husband’s union medical center, retiring from employment in 1994. Irene was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, aunt and God-mother. Irene always enjoyed cooking for her family. Irene and Jim enjoyed traveling abroad, visiting more than a dozen countries in the 1970s and 1980s, including Russia and Morocco. Again, with camera in hand, taking many beautiful photos. She loved to read serious, non-fiction material especially biographies of well-known people. She loved keeping up with the happenings of the Royal Family and, of course, Princess Diana. Irene had some talent as an artist. While not producing very many pieces of art during her mothering and working years, there is a painting of a leopard that is absolutely fantastic! During her years in the Veterans Home, she did many, many coloring pages. One in particular was just an open flower colored with a blue ink pen, it was gorgeously done and perfectly highlighted. Irene is survived by her son, James Joseph Marks (Margaret) of Mickleton, NJ; four grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. Irene was predeceased by her husband, James, as well as her brother Joseph and her sister Ann. A private interment will be held on Saturday April 13, 2024 at the Gloucester County Veterans Cemetery.
