Mrs. Jean Young

Jean Young passed away on September 6, 2020, three weeks after her 95th birthday. Jean Elizabeth Auwetter was born in Swedesboro, New Jersey to John and Emma Auwetter of Clarksboro, New Jersey. Jean was joined by her younger brother Jack in 1930 and grew up in Clarksboro surrounded by the extended families of her maternal aunts and uncles. She was a longtime active member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Clarksboro, and a founding member of the women’s group, Class 13, later known as the Joy Circle. One of her biggest joys was teaching four year old Beginners in Sunday School for over 40 years. She formed lasting relationships with her young pupils as they grew up, and she attended many of their weddings. Toward the end of her life she was honored as the longest active member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church. Jean excelled in school where she won the American Legion Award for girls in the eighth grade. After graduating high school at age 16 in 1942, Jean attended Banks Business College, riding the bus to Philadelphia each day. Upon certification, she began work as a secretary at the Jackson Lab of the Dupont Co. in Deepwater, New Jersey. During the war years of 1942-1945, Jean participated in welcoming the servicemen to the Stagedoor Canteen sponsored by the USO. There in the basement of the Academy of Music she danced to the music provided by the legendary Big Bands nearly every Tuesday night. A serendipitous meeting occurred on the way to the Jackson Lab Christmas party when Jean was encouraged (by their boss) to sit on the lap of a gangly PhD chemist., Edmond Young, because there was not enough room in the car. That pivotal encounter led to a courtship and wedding on September 14, 1946. Apparently they hit it off. The young couple lived first in a Woodbury apartment before they built a house in Mickleton where she and Ed lived the rest of their lives. Their first son Stephen was born on August 19, 1948 followed by daughter Janet in 1951 and second son Timothy in 1958. Jean actively participated in civic and community life. She was an ardent supporter of the Republican party for many years and was also active in the PTA, serving as President of East Greenwich PTA and first President of Kingsway Regional High School PTA. Jean worked over forty years at the election polls in November and was a board member of the East Greenwich Council on Aging for over thirty years. Jean enjoyed traveling the world with her husband Ed to Europe, Asia, north Africa, South America, and Australia, although she always contended the best part of travel was returning back home to Mickleton. She was above all devoted to her family. She is survived by her beloved brother, Jack, of Mickleton, and her three children, Stephen (Susan), of Raphine, VA, Janet (B. Dale Russell), of Port Angeles, WA, and Timothy, of Mickleton, who provided loving care in her last months. Jean is also survived by two granddaughters, Emily Russell, of Puyallup, WA, and Sarah “Sally” Russell, of Phoenix, AZ . She was predeceased by her husband, Edmond G. Young in 2002. The funeral service will be held at 11 am Friday, September 11, 2020 in the McBride-Foley Funeral Home, 228 W. Broad St., Paulsboro. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Friday morning after 10 am until service time. Entombment in Eglington Mausoleum, Clarksboro.
