Warren Middleton

Warren C. Middleton Jr. age 84 years of Mt. Royal died Thursday March 27, 2008 in his home. Mr. Middleton was born in Woodbury and lived in Mt. Royal all of his life. He was a decorated veteran serving in the United States Navy during World War II as a Sonarman Second Class on the USS Flaherty, DE-135. He received the Presidential Unit Citation for participation in the tracking and capture of the German Submarine U-505 and also a personal commendation “For outstanding performance of duty while participating in daylong engagement against an enemy submarine on 24 April 1945.” This was for his role in tracking the German submarine U-546 which was destroyed by the USS Flaherty. When he was younger, he was a member of the Mt. Royal Volunteer Fire Association and he played softball and darts for the Mt. Royal Inn. Mr. Middleton retired in 1985 after 44 years of service as an operator with Mobil Oil Corp., Paulsboro. He was a member of the Anthony T. Calista V.F.W. Post #5579, Gibbstown and the USS Guadalcanal CVE-60 Task Group 22.3 Association. Mr. Middleton served for 21 years on the East Greenwich Board of Education and was their President from 1969 to 1980. He was also a member of the Kingsway Regional Band Boosters from 1965 to 1980. He enjoyed fishing, playing golf, and spending time with his family and talking to friends and neighbors. Mr. Middleton was also an active volunteer for South Jersey Animal Rescue. He was the devoted husband of 60 years of Lois I. Middleton (nee Norris) of Mt. Royal; devoted Father of Lynda and John Liverman of Mt. Royal, Sheryl Middleton of Florence, Jeffrey Middleton of Clarksboro, Brett Middleton of Mt. Royal and “adopted” daughter Linda Sanson; beloved grandfather of Jason Liverman and his fiancé Louisa Correa and Jennifer and Steven Brown; great grandfather of Matthew Brown, Kerri Ann Brown and Toby Brown. Mr. Middleton is also survived by his dog, Bella. He was predeceased by his parents, Warren C. Sr. and Olga Adams Middleton and his brother Wayne. A Memorial Service will be held at 8 PM Tuesday April 1, 2008 in the McBride - Foley Funeral Home, 228 West Broad St., Paulsboro. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 6:30 PM until service time in the funeral home. Inurmnent Committal Service will be held at 10 AM Wednesday April 2, 2008 in the Gloucester County Vets Cemetery, 240 S. Tuckahoe Rd., Monroe Twp., 08094.
